Be Courageous!

We never know what we can accomplish until we try.

A few months ago, my other "job" was entering teams for a corporate 5K challenge. It was to be an early season race and I didn't think that I would be up to "speed" so I didn't sign on.

About a week ago, an e-mail went out that one of the team members was unable to participate and they were looking for a replacement. I had just learned that the meeting I was supposed to attend cancelled leaving me open the day of the event.

This time I thought ...well...if they need someone...I probably won't do well... but I'll be helping the team which might need to cancel otherwise. Long and short...I signed on.

The race was yesterday. The weather was beautiful and I was blessed with the opportunity to get to know some of my coworkers outside the office and to learn we had a common interest. Some of the team, I had only met previously through e-mail or passing in the hall (we work for a very large corporation). Pre-race...I was thinking just this alone made it worthwhile. I had no expectations for a spectacular performance.

Well the race results came in this morning and, of the 12 people in our category from my company, I came in second and made the top 18% overall. We had three teams of three...the group I stepped up to help out came in first of our three teams and we finished in the Top 20 percent...23 out of 116 teams competing.

Needless to say...I am already thinking about participating next year and strategizing ways to shave some time off my overall. Watch out Mr. Number I come!

Surprise Yourself!

Outside the boundaries of your comfort zone lies the land where magic happens. Dare to be the person you were born to be. Let the magic happen!

These words hold so much potential. What gift will you give yourself today? What unexpected treasure waits around the corner? What will you accomplish that you didn't dream was possible? These two words have the power to change your day and set you on a new and exciting path.

I constantly surprise myself. There was a time when it took all the strength and will power I had just to get out of bed in the morning, but I did it. Once you start pushing the boundaries of that which you feel you are capable, you will be amazed and "surprised" by all that you achieve.

I can look back today on all that I have overcome and that gives me the certain knowledge that if I try, magic will follow, but I never cease to be surprised each time I make it to the top of the hill or reach a goal I set for myself...and...each time the joy and excitement that accompany that surprise, make me want to try something else that only seems "impossible."

Remember what the Mad Hatter said to Alice when she exclaimed "this is impossible!" He replied quietly, "only if you believe it is."

"Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."

Make a Memory

Don't forget to be the author of your life. Get out there and write the story.

I always feel badly when I am away from my computer and don't have the opportunity to share with all of you. But then I realized, if I was always at the computer I wouldn't be out there drawing inspiration for the things I share. So that prompted today's inspiration.

This weekend, my daughter attended her first prom. I experienced the pleasure and excitement of helping her prepare. I did her nails and helped her with her make-up. It was one of those great "mom" moments for me.

All the while, I kept remembering my own "first" prom and how excited I was. ...and how young I was (the photo is me at her age, probably taken two or three weeks after my first prom).

One day you are going to your first prom and the next day you are helping your own daughter get ready. I was breathing in the circle of life.

She is just beginning to write her story and I am blessed to be part of her journey. Because of her (Alanna with her date, Jacob, pictured here) and all of you, I am continually inspired and my own story is richer and fuller.

So don't just sit and let life happen without you. Jump in with both feet, with total abandon. Embrace life and build a memory.

Find your passion and work it, baby.

I know...some of you are reading this saying, "blech". But, I have been on all sides of the health and fitness kick. I even used to be, dare I say it, an aerobics instructor...I had the leo, headband, legwarmers, everything. But seriously, exercise has so many emotional benefits. When you have a great workout, the endorphins kick in and the world really does look better.

Exercise is something everyone can succeed at. That's right...there are not "fails" in exercise. Start with a commitment of just 10-15 minutes a day and build from there. Research has shown that just that short amount of time everyday can make a significant difference.

You are never too old, or too out-of-shape. My mother was 95 when she passed away in November and still loved to go for walks. I had some health issues and when I started back on my road to health a year ago, I was in a leg brace and 70 lbs overweight. I never thought I would run again but here I am 66 lbs lighter and running 2-5 miles a day.

I had a childhood friend who lost her leg in an automobile accident when we were teens. She grew up to be a competitive downhill skier...decades before snowboards were invented.

The challenge is to find something you truly enjoy. This former aerobics instructor learned that she really didn't like the "club" scene. I don't workout to "socialize". I workout to get fit and the only person I want to impress or compete with is myself. That isn't a judgement, it is an observation about myself. I found that for me running is my preference. When the weather is cold or inclement, I love to dance. I spent this winter with my Zumba DVDs and teaching myself to belly dance.

What is it that you enjoy? Because if you can answer that question you'll get out and do it. Love what you do and do what you love! And, if I see you on the streets...I'll be sure to wave!

Practice Random Acts of Kindness and Senseless Beauty

All we need is is all we need. ~ The Beatles

What anonymous thing can you do to make someone's day a little brighter? It isn't about getting credit; it's about spreading joy and light in the world. It doesn't have to cost a lot of money ~ an extra quarter in an expired meter; a cup of coffee for the person behind you in line; pieces of candy at your coworkers desks; wildflowers for an elderly neighbor. It doesn't have to cost anything at all ~ a smile and a warm greeting; a note of love, inspiration and gratitude; carrying a bag; holding a door; offering your seat; giving your time.
Let's start a revolution...a universal love revolution. When we give of ourselves, we soon learn how much we are giving to ourselves. What goes around, comes around. Pay it forward!

Follow Your Bliss

Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors where there were only walls. ~ Joseph Campbell

I absolutely love this thought…”follow your bliss.” What is it that brings you happiness and contentment? What is your most favorite thing to do? Who is the person you love seeing most? Visualize your bliss.

Now, go do it…do what makes you happy and content, make time in your day for those things you enjoy most AND for the people who are most important to you. Life is too short to spend it on shoulda, woulda, couldas.

When we pursue our bliss and fill our life with peace and contentment, we are happy. Like attracts like …so…when we are happy, good things follow. When we are happy, we tend to see the best in people and our surroundings.

Be blissful…hopping and skipping through life like a small child. I have been blessed to have such people in my life, people who light up a room just by walking into it. Their joy and happiness,  pure joie de vivre, is contagious. I don’t mind if it’s catching. When we follow our bliss, we manifest bliss and that is a very good thing.

Thinking fondly of those people both near and far who taught me to "follow my bliss" and grateful every day for the blessing of having you in my life. Some are gone these many years. Remembering our time together brings sweet joy and a wistful tear. What I wouldn't give for you to bounce into the room once more.

“When Your Legs Get Tired, Run with Your Heart” ~ Unknown

Not to belabor the running analogy, but someone asked me what you do when you can’t change direction and you have to face the wind.

I responded: “You look down, put one foot in front of the other, take it one step at a time and learn how strong you really are.”

Don’t worry about how far you have to go or what lies ahead. Every journey starts with just one small step and eventually things will get better. The important thing is to never give up because a better day is coming…just beyond the horizon, just around the corner, or over the crest of the hill. It’s there waiting for you.

If you persevere, something happens…something deep within you rises to the surface and you find a power you never knew existed. Once you make up your mind that you will not fail, your body will follow.
